How Many Wedding Invitations Do You Need to Order

When planning a wedding, one of the first decisions most couples make is how many invitations they will order. After all, this is the single piece of stationery that provides vital information about not only your wedding but about each and every person who will be joining you on your special day. That being said, when choosing how many invitations to order it's very important to consider all the factors involved.

How many invitations should you send for your upcoming celebration?

Your venue may have a minimum guest count. In essence, some venues require a minimum number of guests in order to book their space, so it is important to find out if this is the case for your venue. If it is, then you can simply use that minimum as a starting point for your guest list.

It's okay to invite more people than you are expecting to attend. The average wedding invitation acceptance rate is around 60-70%. That means that you should expect about 60% of the people you invite to actually attend your wedding. This can vary depending on where you live and how formal your event will be, so use this as a general rule of thumb and plan accordingly

Consider Your Guest List

Before you decide how many invitations to order, you'll want to take a close look at your guest list. If possible, try to get an accurate headcount so that you can order exactly the right number of invitations. As you’re creating this list, remember that each invite should go to a household – not to an individual.

If it is impossible to get an exact headcount (for example, if your guest list includes children), then consider going with a slightly higher number of invitations. It is always better to overestimate than to underestimate when it comes to invitations, as you may end up having a few guests decline at the last minute.

Make Sure To Add In A Few Extra Invites

When you place your wedding invitation order, make sure to add in a few extra invites just in case. Even if you think you've nailed down your guest list, there will always be those last-minute additions that you forgot to include.

You don't want to start stressing about finding extra wedding invitations at the last minute, so it's best to have a few extra on hand just in case. It's also a good idea to keep a few leftover wedding invitations as keepsakes.

How Many Do You Need For Keepsakes?

You may want to save some invitations as keepsakes after the wedding is over. Some couples choose to frame extra invites and place them around their homes as decorations; others simply store them away in a box with other mementos from their wedding day. But you should plan to order at least 10 extra invitations, just in case.

Give One To Your Vendors

If you have vendors that have played a large part in your wedding day journey, consider giving them a small gift as a token of appreciation. You can give them one of your wedding invitations with a sweet note written on the back.
